eCycle© - 10th Anniversary of the World's Most Advanced Solution to Solve the Global e-Waste Problem
eCycle© has been developed in Switzerland from 1993 onwards under the denomination of "SWICO Recycling Guarantee" - SWICO being the "Swiss Association for Information, Communication and Organization Technology". SWICO is an active promoter of the innovative way to deal with e-Waste, implemented in Switzerland in close cooperation with the "Swiss Governmental Agency for Environment, Forests and Landscape", and offered today to governments worldwide by means of eGovern's business channels. On March 30th 2004 the promoters of eCycle© took the opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their ecological master solution in the newly built Masoala Hall of the Zurich Zoo, where an original site of the rain forest of Madagascar has been reconstructed piece by piece.

Two Greeting Messages have been particularly appreciated by the birthday party guests, of which we are presenting the following extracts:

Extract from the Message of Federal CouncillorMoritz Leuenberger, Head of the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC), Berne
"For ten years now consumers have been able to return their used computers, copiers and mobile phones to Sales outlets. This has become a reality thanks to a sector which, despite fierce competition, has managed to reach a voluntary agreement on a common procedure for collection and recycling used equipment - long before the mobile phone boom and years before the Federal Government's Ordinance on "Taking Back Used Equipment". This commitment by SWICO subsequently made it easier for the Federal Authorities to draw up the basic legal framework to systematically guarantee an environmental-sound disposal of all electronic and electrical equipment.

Our (Swiss) Constitution states that sustainability, and consequently environmental protection, is one of our country's key aims. Those who believe this aim is only pursued by the political classes are much mistaken.

Manufacturers, importers and retailers continue to make progress and - as in the case of SWICO - assume their share of responsibility. ... SWICO started earlier than most others with its commitment and is therefore already in a position to celebrate an anniversary. It turned to nature to find out how new raw materials can be produced from any conceivable form of waste, then how to implement such a cycle and implement others. I congratulate you on your achievements and express my thanks to you!".

Extract from the Message of Mr. W.S. Balta, Vice President Corporate Environmental Affairs and Product Safety of IBM Corp., Somers NY
"It is a pleasure to be here today to help celebrating the birthday of the SWICO Recycling System. As some of you may remember, IBM was one of the companies that helped to develop and implement the SWICO system more than 10 years ago. Since that time, the SWICO system has set a standard by which other programs that came later are compared and measured. ... I think the key to the success of the SWICO system was the early recognition that in order for the system to be successful, there needed to be a consistent and sustainable source of financing. And just asking manufacturers to pay for everything was not going to work. The concept of an advanced recycling fee, first implemented by SWICO, laid the foundation for what became so far the World's most effective electronic product recycling system. ... Today, electronic product manufacturers are being challenged throughout Europe and the rest of the World to implement new product recycling systems. The WEEE directive of the European Union, the Japanese Recycling Law, and even California's Electronic Waste Recycling Act in the United States they all create challenges for our Industry as we implement systems to comply with their requirements. We can only hope that manufacturers, governments and others involved with this issue will look to Switzerland and its cost effective and workable model that was created when devising systems for the rest of the World. So once again, let me congratulate the SWICO team for their longevity and success. You were trailblazers 10 years ago when the system was first implemented, and your system is still the envy of the World. I want to thank you all for allowing me to be here to help celebrating your success!".
